Really not liking windows right now

Posted by Skrud at Sunday, April 30th 2006 at 6:51pm

  • 5 minutes to boot up
  • 10 minutes to login (Loading personal settings … Applying personal settings … a half-drawn box with the words “Personal Settings” in it, a blank turquoise screen….)
  • 5 minutes to do the pre-scan
  • 5 minutes later, it’s still “Processing….”
  • 5 minutes later, it’s still “Processing….” and I get bored so I started writing this post.
  • Figured I’d open up Acrobat Reader in advance, it only took a split second to load.
  • OMG THIS SUCKS The scanner still says “Scanning…”

  • Eep, I think it moved.

  • No, false alarm.

  • Still “Processing….”
  • I need to pee.
  • Maybe it froze?
  • I really don’t want to hit “cancel”. What if it’s about to actually scan?
  • I felt the scanner move again ….
  • …. I think. It must’ve been my imagination.
  • If I hit “Cancel”, it’ll have to start all over again. I’d better not.
  • I want to punch the usability engineers at HP for misuse of the Progress pattern. It’s supposed to show that the program is actually doing something.
  • Goddammit I’ve been at this “Processing…” phase for over 10 minutes already!
  • I hit cancel.
  • The HP PrecisionScan Pro is frozen.
  • Fuck.
  • Task Manager -> End Task. Take that, bitch.
  • “You chose to end the nonresponsive program, HP PrecisionScan Pro. Please Tell Microsoft About This Problem.
  • FUCK YOU ALL I JUST WANT TO SCAN SOMETHING.
  • Holy crap The Gimp is installed. Yay Concordia!
  • TWAIN Acquire …
  • Holy crap that was FAST. Scanned right away.
  • File -> Save As… TIFF
  • I wish I would’ve noticed the GIMP there earlier.
  • Open Source: 1, Windows: -1, HP: -\infty.

Well, is it really fair to blame windows, since we all know that those 2 LABS realy realy realy suck!?

On my laptop windows doesn’t take more than 20 sec for boot i think, and on my home edition partition it takes practicly nothing (shutdown and restart) and thats a year old laptop.

You’re absolutely right. Windows is not at fault here. Hewlett Packard is, and Concordia is for having messed up profiles.

I was just frustrated and angry. Misdirected blame, I guess. :P

Yeah, windows isnt’ to blame.. Because it’s MUCH easier to misconfigure linux and have exponentially more disastrous consenquences.

What i don’t understand though is why those two labs are SO slow compared to the other ones.

I mean those are 2ghz computers!? (thats still kinda GOOD)

I’m happy 2ghz PC’s are still good! Moores law has died, and as a direct consenquence my 3-4 year old PC is still able to keep up with the newest PC’s! All I gotta keep doing is feed it more ram, videocards, and harddrives :)

Gill touched my keyboard today… the computer was running slow, but then it died and would not come back. :(

    (unrelated to your post)

I’ve been working on my resume and finding that most of them blend together stylistically. I really like the way you’ve simplified your name and contact information at the top. It was made in with Latex?

    cheers, mb

Nope it was made in Pages.

The contact information only shows my e-mail address and website in the online version, since I didn’t want to publish my address and phone number all over the place.
