Vintage Gaming Bash

Posted by Skrud at Friday, March 24th 2006 at 10:46am

Last night was DMSA’s first ever Vintage Gaming Bash. There was plenty of cheap beer, and tons of old school systems, including: Atari Flashbacks, Nintendo Entertainment Systems, a Sega Master System, some Sega Geneses (the OED doesn’t have plural for “Genesis”, so I’m making this up), and even a Mac Classic for MacTris. They had Duck Hunt, including the Nintedo Zapper light gun (which is the coolest piece of technology ever, once Newton told me how they work).

I blew on a cartridge for the first time in over a decade. That takes me way back. I played Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?for the Sega Master System. Did you know that you could get shot by the henchmen? Then you lose a few hours of time. Yikes. There were some old favourites: Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Double Dragon…. Streets of Rage… They just don’t make games like they used to. Where are the beat-em-ups these days?

On to the Atari Flashbacks… Newton and I unfortunately faced off in Pong in the first round of the tournament. It’s a damn shame, like having the Habs and the Leafs face each other in the first round of the playoffs. It was an epic battle of skill, and the comeback of the century. Newton beat me 11 - 9 after I caught up from 10 - 4. At least I wasn’t defeated by that 8-year-old kid. :P

The only thing missing was Blades of Steel. Someone has to find that game. Best Hockey Game Ever.

Unfortunately, the event ended too early. I could’ve stayed until 10am the next day!

Yeah everyone that was there will be coming back for sure and everyone’s going to bring more friends. I’d expect the place to be pretty packed next time.

You forgot NBA Jam. That was so much fun back in the day. The combat tanks thing was really stressful too. Having crappy controls adds a huge amount of luck and fun =)

I want to play more of those old games!!

I remember getting shot by the henchmen in WWCS. Doesn’t he or she laugh at you and then run off?

    Bah!
