Skrud in a Nutshell

Information about me

  • People call me “Skrud.” That’s not my real name, it’s a nickname that’s lasted since the 8th grade. I kind of like it. Sometimes I introduce myself as “Skrud.” Often, it sticks.
  • I’ve graduated from Software Engineering at Concordia University. I made the switch from Computer Science after my first year, for which CUSEC 2004 is largely responsible.
  • I used to be the president of the Concordia Computer Science Society (2005-2006), and before that I was VP of Internal relations, External relations and Social activities (2004-2005). But I was a much better VP than a President.
  • I was VP Academic of the Engineering and Computer Science Association (also known as ECA), which is the faculty association representing all undergraduate Engineering and Computer Science students at Concordia.
  • I ♥ Unix. I have a PowerBook running OS X, and a desktop running Linux.
  • I tried Linux From Scratch once, and I got a working Linux system, but I gave up once I learned that there’s a sequel. I’m way too lazy for that. I’m pretty happy with Ubuntu
  • Lately, I’ve been wishing that my desktop was a Mac, too…
  • When I was 4, on a family trip to Israel, I happened to be looking up into the sky at just the wrong time for a fly to drop maggots into my eye. During a doctors’ strike, no less. Not only did the one doctor we could find have to forcibly pull out each individual maggot one at a time with tweezers while I was being held down, screaming, by my parents, but I had to be given eye-drops for weeks causing me to throw tantrums out of protest.
  • Sometimes, I practice Aikido at the Sukagawa Aikido Club of Montreal, but I haven’t gone in almost 3 years.
  • C is my first language, followed by English. I can speak little bits of French (which has improved a lot recently), fragments of German from my last year of High School, and chunks of Japanese that I’ve managed to pick up on my own after receiving excellent lessons from Emi Kanamaru-sensei. (She is currently back home in Japan and I hope she’s doing well!)
  • I’m the coolest nerd. And I have the certificate to prove it.
